The hymns are written as simply as possible for a beginning piano student with no more than two notes for each hand.

The student should have the ability to--or be working on the ability to--read notes on the grand staff, play sharps and flats in the keys of D, G, D, F, Bb, Eb, and Ab, and count the rhythm of whole notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes.

The student should play through the 40 hymns focusing on the key signatures and becoming familiar with the three primary chords in each key which are shown on the "I, IV, and V7 Chord Chart."
